Donald Davies

Donald Davies (1924-2000) was a Welsh computer scientist and one of the pioneers of packet switching, a fundamental technology underlying the internet. He co-invented the concept and led the development of the NPL network, one of the earliest packet-switched networks. Davies' work laid the foundation for modern computer networking and revolutionized data communication.

One of two independent inventors of the concept of digital packet switching used in modern computer networking including the Internet.Conceived of and named the concept for data communication networks (1965–66).Many of the wide-area packet-switched networks of the 1970s, including ARPANET, were similar "in nearly all respects" to his original 1965 design.

Donald Watts Davies, was a British computer scientist and Internet pioneer who was employed at the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

• During 1965-67, he and his team at the National Physical Laboratory invented modern data communications, including packet switching, high-speed routers, layered communication protocols, hierarchical computer networks and the essence of the end-to-end principle, concepts that are used today in computer networks worldwide.
• Davies proposed and studied a commercial national data network in the United Kingdom and designed and built the first implementation of packet switching in the local-area NPL network in 1969 to demonstrate the technology.
